Wegovy pill approved in Australia: cost, availability and what we know

The Therapeutic Goods Administration registered oral Wegovy (semaglutide) on 3 November 2026. The once-daily tablet is a new formulation; its Australian pharmacy launch, retail price and PBS status are separate questions that remain unresolved.

The approval adds a daily oral option to prescription weight-management treatment. When can Australians get it, could it cost less than injections, and what does its daily routine involve? This guide separates confirmed information from questions still awaiting an answer.

What is the new Wegovy pill?

The new tablet contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist also used in other prescription products. The TGA registration covers four strengths: 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg. It is an oral formulation intended for once-daily administration. RACGP reported the registration includes chronic weight management and reducing the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in eligible adults, consistent with the injectable formulation.

Australia already has an oral semaglutide medicine, Rybelsus, which is registered for type 2 diabetes. Oral Wegovy is a separate product registered for weight management in eligible adults. The products have different registered uses, strengths and instructions; they are not interchangeable. A qualified prescriber determines whether any medicine or formulation is appropriate for an individual.

The distinction is its approved use: oral Wegovy is Australia's first oral GLP-1 medicine specifically approved for weight management, not the country's first oral GLP-1 medicine of any kind. The prescribed strength and any later changes must be decided by a qualified prescriber; patients should not compare or convert tablet and injection doses themselves.

How much will the Wegovy pill cost in Australia?

As of 5 November 2026, an Australian retail price for oral Wegovy had not been announced. There is no verified Australian tablet price per pack or per month. Reports of tablets costing less than injections in some overseas markets do not establish an Australian price. Pharmacy pricing differs between countries, so overseas amounts are not Australian estimates.

No PBS listing for oral Wegovy for weight management had been announced by that date. Registration and PBS funding are separate processes. We will update this report when a confirmed Australian price or listing status is available.

For a comparison with the currently available injectable formulation, see our Wegovy cost guide for Australia.

When will Wegovy tablets be available in Australia?

Novo Nordisk said it was working towards Australian availability later in 2026, but no confirmed pharmacy launch date had been announced as of 5 November. Outstanding TGA checks on packaging and manufacturing processes still needed to be completed before release. TGA registration does not mean the tablets are already at pharmacies: registration, pharmacy supply and PBS listing are separate milestones that need not happen at the same time.

RACGP reported that discussions about PBS funding for injectable Wegovy were continuing after a recommendation for its inclusion. That does not mean oral Wegovy has been approved for a PBS subsidy; no weight-management listing for the tablet had been announced as of 5 November.

Will the Wegovy pill interest people new to GLP-1 treatment?

RACGP reported that US Wegovy pill prescriptions passed three million in just over five months after the tablet launched there on 5 January 2026. The manufacturer described the launch as one of the strongest by volume and said the majority of new pill prescriptions were for people new to GLP-1 therapy. Novo Nordisk also said that amounted to about one prescription filled every five seconds. These are US figures reported by the manufacturer; they do not predict Australian demand.

Separately, RACGP cited NostraData estimates that 1.6 million Australians bought a GLP-1 medicine privately in the previous 12 months. The pharmacy dataset covered more than 90% of community pharmacies, but the estimate covers GLP-1 medicines generally, not demand for oral Wegovy specifically.

RACGP President Dr Michael Wright said some people may have avoided treatment because it involved injections, while others may ask about changing formulation. That is a reason for informed conversations with a regular GP, not a prediction that any particular treatment will suit someone.

Daily tablets and weekly injections: what is different?

The oral formulation is designed for daily use, while the existing Australian Wegovy formulation is a weekly injection. That changes the practical routine as well as the form of the medicine.

Practical detailOral WegovyInjectable Wegovy

FrequencyDailyWeekly
TimingSpecific morning administration instructionsThe weekly injection day prescribed for you
MealsEmpty stomach and a waiting period, according to the supplied instructionsNot tied to meals in the same way
OrganisationDaily tablets, prescription details and refillsWeekly doses, pen supply, prescription details and refills
Weight recordsPersonal records to discuss at medical reviewsPersonal records to discuss at medical reviews

The formulations are not directly interchangeable by milligram strength. Any change in medicine or formulation is a clinical decision, not a cost-comparison decision. Some people may prefer the idea of a daily tablet; others may find a weekly routine more practical. Neither preference establishes which treatment is suitable.

The TGA says using Wegovy tablets or injection with other semaglutide-containing products or another GLP-1 receptor agonist is not recommended. A regular GP can assess suitability and discuss serious side effects, other health conditions, diet and exercise as part of care.

The morning routine deserves its own attention

Once-daily use does not mean the tablet can simply be taken at any convenient time. As reported by RACGP, the US instructions describe taking it on waking on an empty stomach with a sip of water, then waiting at least 30 minutes before food, other drinks or other oral medicines. Australian users should follow the locally approved information supplied with their medicine and the directions of their prescriber or pharmacist.

For someone with several morning medicines, the organisational questions are practical:

  • How does the tablet fit into the morning schedule my clinician has prescribed?
  • Where can I keep its instructions alongside those for my other medicines?
  • When do I need to arrange the next prescription refill?
  • Where can I record weight entries between medical reviews?

Keeping these details organised is different from choosing a medicine, deciding a dose or interpreting how it is absorbed.

Keep the routine, prescription and weight record connected

A prescription involves more than a medicine name. The prescribed timing, instructions, next refill, expiry date and information for the next appointment all need a place. MediRemind brings the details you enter together rather than leaving them in scattered notes.

  • Medicines: Organise the medication list and schedules prescribed for you.
  • Prescriptions: Store eScripts with expiry dates and remaining repeats.
  • Reminders: Set reminders using the instructions your health professional has given you.
  • Weight: Record personal weight entries and view them on a chart.
  • Appointment preparation: Keep prescription-renewal dates and the details you want to discuss with your clinician together.

These are general medication-organisation features, not a dedicated oral Wegovy treatment program. MediRemind does not select medicines, calculate absorption or fasting requirements, automatically determine an administration schedule, or recommend dose changes.

Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?

No. Both products contain semaglutide, but they have different Australian registrations, strengths and instructions. Rybelsus is registered for type 2 diabetes. Oral Wegovy has now been registered for weight management in eligible adults. Neither name nor shared active ingredient makes the products interchangeable.

See our Wegovy versus Rybelsus Australia guide for the product comparison and current PBS context.

What can people keep track of?

Tablets and injections can both involve several dates to remember. A personal record can include the following, copied from the prescription and advice you have received:

  • The exact prescribed medicine and strength.
  • The schedule and administration instructions provided by the prescriber.
  • The prescription's remaining repeats and expiry date.
  • The next expected refill.
  • Weight entries, if you choose to keep them.
  • The date of the next prescription review.

An app can keep these administrative records together. It should not decide treatment changes or replace professional advice.

Frequently asked questions

1. Has the Wegovy pill been approved in Australia?

Yes. The TGA registered oral Wegovy (semaglutide) on 3 November 2026 in strengths of 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg. Registration is separate from pharmacy availability and PBS listing.

2. When will Wegovy tablets be available in Australia?

A confirmed pharmacy launch date has not been announced. Availability was anticipated later in 2026, subject to outstanding requirements.

3. How much will oral Wegovy cost in Australia?

An Australian retail price had not been announced as of 5 November 2026. Overseas prices are not reliable Australian price estimates.

4. Is the Wegovy pill on the PBS?

No PBS listing for oral Wegovy for weight management had been announced as of 5 November 2026. TGA registration does not automatically mean PBS subsidy.

5. Is oral Wegovy taken every day?

The new formulation is designed for once-daily use. Its instructions cover fasting, water and the interval before food, drinks or other oral medicines. Follow the Australian information supplied with your medicine and your health professional's advice.

6. Can MediRemind help organise daily prescription tablets?

MediRemind offers medication reminders, prescription storage, repeat and expiry management, and personal weight records. It helps organise information you enter; it does not claim a dedicated oral Wegovy treatment planner or automatically determine an administration schedule.

7. Is the Wegovy tablet the same as Rybelsus?

No. Both contain semaglutide, but they are separate prescription products with different registered uses, strengths and instructions. They are not interchangeable.

8. Can someone change from Wegovy injections to tablets?

That is an individual prescribing decision. Tablet and injection strengths should not be compared or converted by patients themselves.

9. Can Wegovy be used with another semaglutide or GLP-1 medicine?

The TGA says using Wegovy tablets or injection with another semaglutide-containing product or another GLP-1 receptor agonist is not recommended. Ask a prescriber or pharmacist about your own medicines.

The news is new; the everyday details still need organising

Oral Wegovy's registration is an important development, but a person's day-to-day needs remain individual: a prescribed schedule, prescription dates, a refill and the information to bring to the next review.
